Fred Beans took a risk at a young age. Fueled by the desire to be a successful entrepreneur, he purchased Big Oak service station in the late 1950s with a $5,500 loan co-signed by his mother. His out-of-the-box marketing ideas and tireless work ethic brought Beans success, and a hunger for a bigger challenge. In 1972, he bought a 25-percent share of Bill Marsh Ford in Newtown, where his diligent efforts doubled business in the first year. The Fred Beans Family of Dealerships is a proud resident and participant in the community of Doylestown and Central Bucks County - we are striving to make a difference. "Acadia safety features saves two lives"
Back in December, I helped my friend Jim B. test drive and purchase a new vehicle. He was looking to replace his family's minivan, so he decided to check out the new crossovers that are on the market. In the end, we agreed the GMC Acadia was his best choice, which he purchased from Fred Beans Buick Pontiac GMC in Limerick, PA. At the time, I remember thinking what a great riding vehicle, and it also had a 5-star (which is the best) government front- and side-impact ratings.
Last Thursday night we took a trip up to the Poconos for the weekend, and it was the first time I had driven in Jim's Acadia since he purchased it, which was less than three months ago. We were within 10 miles of our destination on a typically infamous Pennsylvania-type road. That means barely a few feet of shoulder space, a large hill on our right, and a cliff off to the left; yet the speed limits varied from 40-55 MPH. The roads were perfectly dry, although along the side of the road was plenty of piled snow and cinders for melting ice. The next thing that happened only took a few seconds.
As we came around a blind curve, we were both in shock as we saw a car that had been driving in the opposite direction sliding sideways directly toward us in our lane. Jim immediately reacted by braking sharply and veering towards the center of the road. The out of control car skid across in front of us, spun into the embankment to our right, then came back to hit us square in the passenger door where I was sitting. The first thing I felt was my head hit what I thought was plastic against the passenger door, and that I was sucked completely back into the seat. Then we got a sharp nudge when we got rear-ended. Later we found out that the car also hit the SUV behind us which caused them to rear-end our vehicle.
The stability control kept our car from skidding or sliding at all. The plastic that I thought my head hit was actually the side air bag that deployed, which saved me from going into/through the passenger side window (I also had no pain at all in my head). The feeling of getting sucked back into the seat was the work of seatbelt pre-tensioners, which add tension (pull you back) and lock when an accident is sensed. These pre-tensioners saved us both from any whiplash effect from getting rear-ended (about 15 years ago, my mom got rear-ended which resulted in having a disc removed from her neck). In the end, I walked away with nothing more than a little soreness from a significant accident, and by the next day I had no pain at all. Jim was perfectly fine as well.
A big thank you to GM for such a finely made and safe vehicle. Stability control, side air bags, and seatbelt pre-tensioners are well worth the expense, and will definitely be requirements on my next vehicle purchase.Scott R.,
